Building Innovation
Energy Saving Technologies will be incorporated into the building structure and some will also be free standing. The purpose is to show
as full a range of technologies as possible. Heat and power producing devices will beindividually metered so that their net contribution can be calculated. All the data will be collected by a new piece of software. This unique software will be linked to demonstration flat screens showing live data on energy production, consumption etc. The research to achieve this is being commissioned by John Strawson but will be available for others to adapt.
This facility will be unique to England and will for the first time allow potential customers to make direct comparisons. The demonstration will be suitable for public, private and commercial applications.
Devices on demonstration include the following:
- Energy Saving Devices such as automatic lighting, high thermal mass compounds and solar architecture.
- Biomass Boiler. The woodchip District heating system already heating the other offices, the farm office and GD Strawsons house will be extended into this building to provide space and water heating. At least one pellet boiler (of around 10kW ie domestic sized) will also be installed for demonstration purposes.
- Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps for heating and air conditioning.
- Solar Photovoltaic (PV) cells.
- Solar panels.
- A small free standing wind turbine (domestic size) will be located on the grass between the new parking and the storage buildings. As well as providing metering data this will also act as a visual attraction.
- Air conditioning with heat exchange.
- Rain water harvesting and grey water use.
- John Strawson is lead partner with the DTI developing a device which will be a mini biomass CHP unit that heats, cools and provides electricity and it is hoped that this can be demonstrated.
